The “Big” Thing
I said I would let everyone in on what the “big” thing was with the crew that Mark shuttled in and out of the Boundary Waters last weekend. One of the members of the crew is writing a story on winter camping for a major men’s magazine. I don’t know if I am at liberty to say which one at this point, but it is a national magazine with a circulation of over 700,000. The story is about comparing the “old gear” way of winter camping; canvas wall tent, woodstove, etc. with the “new gear”; high tech gear and no woodstove. The author of the story and the photographer the magazine hired were camped with Mike Prom of Voyageur with the “old” gear while the two others were camped on another lake in the “new” gear. They spent Friday and Saturday nights camped separately and Sunday the “new” guys camped with the “old” guys so when Mark, Mike, Julie and the dogs showed up, all they had to do was load the sleds and head back to the trucks. There is more to the story of what happened out there. For that you will have to read Sue Prom’s Boundary Waters Blog as she is doing a two-part Survivor story on it. The magazine story won’t be coming out until sometime late this fall or early winter, so we all will have to wait to see what the author has to say about the adventure and what he thought of being shuttled by dog team. Unfortunately I didn’t get any photos as I was too preoccupied with taking care of the dogs at the truck and while on the trail Mark was too preoccupied with making sure everyone made it out safely so we are at the mercy of the others to send us photos. When I get some I will be sure to pass them along.
We did find another casualty yesterday after hauling the sleds home. One of our old sleds had the plastic bed crack and unless we take the whole sled apart and rebuild it, it’s pretty much toast. Good thing this was a sled we hadn’t used in nearly ten years was only resurrected for this run. Mark’s old faithful tobaggan sled needs a couple of repairs along with his race sled. It appears that his basket sled made it fairly unscathed, while my basket sled needs a stantion replaced…it cracked in half. Fortunately we don’t use that one much either. Monument Portage into Ottertrack Lake is something Mark, Mike Dvorak, Mike Prom and Julie will be talking about for a long time to come.
Time to get back into work mode. Have a great Wednesday.
Daylight Watch: Tommorrow will be 3 minutes and 28 seconds longer than today!!!
